This original adaptation of The Life and Music of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is the story of Black violin virtuoso Joseph Bologne’s true friendships with Mozart and Marie Antoinette, and his astonishing and widely unrecognized contribution to the abolition of slavery.
Conceived, written and directed by Bill Barclay, The Chevalier is a powerful meditation on the true nature of equality and brings the fervor of Revolution to our fight for justice in today’s America.

The superb young violinist Alina Kobialka is back this season, bringing her ardent playing to a Concert Fantasy on Der Rosenkavalier by Teddy Niedermaier. We’ll also be featuring a suite from A Place of Beauty, Robert Edward Smith’s opera about Isabella Stewart Gardner. British romantic composer Christopher Wilson’s lively Suite for String Orchestra and the gorgeous Love Scene from Victor Herbert’s Serenade will complete this evening of romance.

The young virtuoso cellist Antonio Casarano is featured in Haydn’s Concerto in C and Robert Edward Smith’s charming Variations on An Old American Tune. David Ludwig’s Virtuosity lets soloists from each of the COB’s string sections to shine. Four Sonatas by Scarlatti, arranged by Ken Stallberg and another wonderful selection from the Danish Quartet, Sorenson’s Shine You No More round out this program of musical pyrotechnics.
